Can Positive Affirmations Help Calm Anxiety?

Since it all begins in your mind, anything you can do to manage your mind will help to calm anxiety.  
 
A great place to start is to notice when your thoughts are negative.  At first this can feel like a monumental task. 

Give yourself permission to become aware of them, to not judge them or react to them, just to simply notice them.  This is a powerful first step. 

The next step is to replace your negative thoughts with positive and empowering ones.  A great way to do this is with positive affirmations!
 
Now how can you create your positive affirmations?
 
Write down what your negative thoughts are and how you talk to yourself negatively.  Then think about what the polar opposites would be.  For example, if what you have ruminating in your mind is, “I can’t do this”, a great positive affirmation would be, “I CAN do this.”  Another one might be, “I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.”

Take your negative thoughts and treat them like a coinFlip the coin to the other side.  If you’re saying to yourself, “I’m constantly struggling”, what the opposite of this statement might be is, “I’m doing great!”  If you keep thinking over and over again, “I’m just one big ball of stress,” then the positive affirmation from that might be, “I am at peace with myself and the universe,” or, I am relaxed and calm and all is well.”  
 
This is a great way to do something positive and constructive with all that negative thinking that you put yourself through.  
 
A practice to add to your positive affirmations is to give yourself dedicated and conscious worry time.
 
Sometimes it’s really tough to get out of the habit of worrying, because it’s so undefined inside your head, so you get stuck in it and can’t move beyond.  A simple way out of it is to choose a short period of time, maximum 30 minutes, and dedicate it as your conscious worry time, meaning that you’re worrying with a conscious intention.
 
Ideally dedicate the same time each day, which is an effective way to create a new habit, and ideally schedule it nowhere near bedtime so that you don’t keep yourself up worrying, or just as undermining, carry your worry into your sleep.
 
Have a pad and pen that’s specifically for this purpose – let’s call it your worry pad and pen.  Now literally throw down on paper everything you’re anxious and worrying about.  No editing, no organizing, just throw it down.   
 
At the end of the 30 minutes, put it aside, take a few deep breaths, and let it all go until the next day when you will have your dedicated worry time to repeat the process. This is an incredibly simple yet powerful way to get everything you’re worrying about out of your head and place it somewhere outside of yourself.  This is amazingly freeing and effective.  Watch what happens when you do it!
 
And these worries that you write down are a great source of ideas for your affirmations.  Just use the ‘flipping the coin’ technique to find the language for them.
 
Repetition is the name of the game.  So create a daily practice for yourself and say your positive affirmations out loud every morning and every evening, again preferably at the same time.  

Can positive affirmations help calm anxiety?  
 
What will also help relieve your anxiety is believing that your affirmations are true!  Believing that not only will they work, but also that they are working right now, even if you can’t yet see the proof.  You will accelerate the power and effectiveness of your positive affirmations by believing in them.   
 
So, as you notice anxiety creeping in, follow these easy steps:

  • Notice, without judgment, that you’re having negative thoughts.
  • Think of what the opposite of your negative thought would be-flip the coin-and create a positive affirmation.
  • Give yourself dedicated worry time.
  • Empty your mind and write down everything you’re worrying about.
  • Say your affirmations every day, upon waking and before sleep.
  • Believe that your affirmations are true and working right now!

When you end and begin your day with positive affirmations and think about ideal outcomes, you will create the space for your mind to create solutions which would otherwise be impossible when you’re stuck knee deep in worry.
