There is a marvelous quote from the Dalai Lama that goes as follows: “I believe that the very purpose of life is to seek happiness.”
This sounds so simple, yet most of us are not living our lives this way. We get caught up in all the busyness of our lives, and the last thing that we’re thinking about is happiness.
Think about all of the elements in your life: your business or job, romance, family, friends, home, health and wellbeing, financial health, personal growth, and giving back. As a matter of course, how often do you check in on how happy you are in each and every area? Probably rarely if ever. Somehow happiness doesn’t show up high on your priority list.
However, what happens when you do make happiness more important in your life is it completely transforms your experience of your life and how you see the world!
Imagine if you were to make your purpose of life to seek happiness!
You may have some gremlins, those negative voices in your head, coming up and saying, “What if I’m too happy? What if people think I’m crazy?” You might well stand out from the crowd because, quite honestly, so few people are overtly happy. However, resist the urge to give in to the temptation to just fit in.
It’s more than okay for you to be experiencing a life of complete joy and happiness! It begins with you giving yourself full permission to do so, then choosing to experience the world through the filter of happiness.
What does the Dalai Lama say about the purpose of life?
You deserve to love every inch of your life, and to live each day to the fullest.
You know how easy it is to fall into the trap of putting things off – when you hear yourself saying, “One day when …” or “Someday I’ll …”? And then you never get around to it. Have you ever known anyone who was putting off having fun in life until they retired. And by the time they reached that point, they didn’t have the energy or good health to do so?
The time is NOW for you to take charge of your life – to create it and live it your way!
Here’s how to go about finding more happiness in life:
- Start with one area in your life where you want more happiness.
- Write out what that looks like when you’re totally happy. In other words, describe the ideal picture of you in that area of your life totally happy.
- Identify what it will take to create that amazing happiness.
- List your first three action steps to achieve that happiness.
- Take them!
You owe it to yourself to create total joy and happiness in every area of your life! In case you’re thinking that this is totally selfish, the exact opposite is true!
When YOU are the beacon of light, when you’re truly living your purpose of life, you will become contagious. You will inspire others to take on being happy in their lives too. If you’re a parent, imagine the powerful impact you will have on your children just by being outrageously happy?!
Wherever your travels take you, choose to be that positive catalyst out in the world.
